Bands that Make the Use of the Verb to be Sound Stupid
The Epoxies is a band that plays a newer form of new-wave-style punk and
the members of the band like to wear clothing that features black-and-white
stripes. So when you think The Epoxies, think black-and-white stripes.
When you think The White Stripes, think red-and-white clothing. And when
you think The Warlocks, think of black and its grey variants. Sorry for
the lack of punch on that one. Groovy Ghoulies and The Apers also play
and it all goes down at Salt Lake City’s favorite all-ages venue/garage
Kilby Court (741 S. 330 West).

To pay all you loyal readers back for cracking open an issue of RED each
Thursday, we are throwing a party at Kilby Court. Local bands ???, ???,
??? and hardcore protest punk quartet Kontrakultura will play. Entrance
is $2 and that goes to pay the fine folks at Kilby Court. Plus we have

Be there or we will be very sad. It all starts at 8:00 p.m., Kilby Court
is located on 741 S. 330 West.
Dave Chisholm Quartet
Remember that cover story Lou did on the Salt Lake Alternative Jazz Orchestra,
SLAJO? Well, in it he mentioned a new local jazz band that would be doing
arrangements of old-school country tunes to supplement its own compositions.
The Dave Chisholm Quartet is that band, with Chisholm on trumpet, duh,
Adam Leishman on bass clarinet, Pat Campbell on the drumkit and Willis
Clow on guitar. The music starts at 9:30 p.m. at Zanzibar 679 S. 200 West.
Midnight Movie: “Full Metal Jacket”
Stanley Kubrick, aka God, made “Full Metal Jacket” as his
attack on the Vietnam war. The film follows Matthew Modine as Joker, who
goes through a hellish training camp and then becomes a wartime journalist.
It’s not as good as “Dr. Strangelove” or “Paths
of Glory,” but it’s still Kubrick. Part of the war part of
the Tower Theatre’s (876 E. 900 South) Midnight Movie Series from
the Salt Lake Film Society, which is doing anti war films both at midnight
and during the day, with “No Man’s Land,” winner of
last year’s Best Foreign Film Oscar.
Saturday April 19
Ol’ Dirty Bastard
One of the gagillion MCs from the legendary Wu Tang Clan is in town solo.
Go see him in all his Ol’ Dirty Bastardness at Brick’s (579

Film Front: “The Flowers of Shanghai”
Hou Hsiao-Hsien’s “The Flowers of Shanghai” (1998) depicts
life in a brothel, known as a “flower house.” Chris Lippard
of the University of Utah film department calls it one of the best films
of the last 15 years. He also says it’s slow-paced and beautiful.
Decide for yourself at one of the last three films from the U’s
Film Front this season. Free. 35-mm prints. Sundays. 7:00 p.m. Orson Spencer
Hall auditorium (next to the Union. Check it out.Monday April 21

the Beat Section or go see them play along with Mudvayne and Blindside
at the E Center in West Valley.
Tuesday April 22
Alchemy
The local rockers of Alchemy will play the Urban Lounge, 241 S. 500 East.
We’d say more, but Lou has been censored from talking shit about
their stellar rating in RED. They are good, trust us, actually they are
better than good, they are swell, and the live show is sweller.
Wednesday April 23
Afro Omega
Have you heard about this new Afro Omega thing? It sounds pretty wicked.
Don’t wait for us to tell you about it, go find out for yourself
at Monk’s House of Jazz (19 E. 200 South underneath Kinko’s).
Baby Bye Bye
So the next RED doesn’t come out until May 15 and in the summer
we will print every other week. Check out www.RED Mag.com on the Web for
updates and feel free to send questions or comments to jeremy@red mag.com,
but don’t expect him to acknowledge them, as he’s a mean,
drunken bastard. So here’s some recommendations of things to do
until the next issue.
Thursday April 24
Talib Kweli
Talib Kweli is one of the best rappers on the scene, with two solo albums
under his belt to supplement his legendary collaboration with Mos Def.
Go see him headline at Club Suede, Kimbal Junction, 1612 Ute Blvd. Quetté
Daddie and Black sheep open.
Chubby Bunny, The Discharge Chubby Bunny is a female punk rock
group…the last time we checked. The sound is awesome and you should
see them. As far as The Discharge goes, the band has to be pretty good
to be playing with Chubby Bunny, eh? So check them out to at the Urban
Lounge (241 S. 500 East). We don’t think the cover has ever been
more than $5.
Monday April 28
Smashing Pumpkins…er, I mean Zwan
Billy Corigan is at it again with his new rock group, Zwan. The band will
play at SaltAir, just go west on I-80 and stop when you see the temple-like
edifice in the distance. It’s not a mirage, it’s the venue.
There’s a Pixies song about it called “Palace of Brine.”
Tuesday April 29
Local Aggression
Local Hardcore duo Smashy Smashy, fronted by local guitarist extraordinaire
Gentry Densley, play at the Urban Lounge, 241 S. 500 East. Go and worship
Wednesday April 30
The Grandpapa of Surf Guitar
Dick Dale comes to Salt Lake City just about once a year, around the same
time of year. He is king when it comes to surf guitar. You know the super
famous song from “Pulp Fiction,” “Miserlou?” That’s
Dick Dale in all his greatness. See him do it live at the Zephyr, 301
S. West Temple. 355-CLUB is the number to call for ticket information.
Thursday May 1
May Day
It’s International Worker’s Day, so skip work, join the labor
movement and do something lefty. There’s probably a celebration
in one of the parks in Salt Lake City. Keep your eyes peeled for more
info.
Thursday May 8
Geek Show
This show will feature The Melvins, a band that plays slow hardcore rock
that is awesome, Tomahawk, a Melvins side project that’s opened
for Tool on a number of occasions, and Skeleton Key, an indie-rock band
that is supposed to be good. It all happens at Brick’s (579 W 200
South). It’s an early show, it starts at 6 p.m.
