The 25-track soundtrack to the recently released motion picture “House
Of 1000 Corpses” appears to deliver a real bang for your buck,
but only 10 of the 25 tracks are actually pop music, the rest comprise
instrumental music from the film’s soundtrack or merely audio
clips from the movie, both out of context.
The long-awaited “Brick House 2003” by Rob Zombie featuring
Lionel Richie & Trina isn’t bad—but it’s not quite
what one would hope for from Zombie, who did an excellent job with the
disco song “I’m Your Boogieman.” The rhythm is still
funky, but with some amped-up guitars to add texture and Zombie’s
gravel vocals, which accompany Richie. Trina kicks a rap over a repetitive
guitar riff and the song also has audio clips of a woman who sounds
like she’s about to have an orgasm—good for her.
Zombie’s “Run, Rabbit, Run” delivers a good hard-edged
guitar driven industrial sound—probably the strongest new composition
on the album. “Everybody Scream” is trite lyrically and
the music is straightforward hard rock with a hint of industrial aggression.
The song “House Of 1000 Corpses” is a blues-tinged industrial-sounding
tune with enough grit to hold its own. “Pussy Liquor” has
a catchy hook and employs what sounds like a horn section for the chorus,
but is lyrically weak.
The non-Zombie songs help the soundtrack. “Who’s Gonna Mow
Your Grass?” by Buck Owens, The Ramones “Now I Wanna Sniff
Some Glue” and Slim Whitman’s “I Remember You”
all offer a nice break from the “creepy” music. But Helen
Kane’s “I Wanna be Loved by You” is annoying.
The instrumental music clips are good and moderately eerie, but probably
fit better in the context of the film than as stand-alone tracks.
